Due to a major work malfunction involving excel spreadsheets, mysterious loss of data, and a hard deadline of 8am this morning, I was up until midnight last night repairing a document I had been working on most of the day. This, in addition to wall-to-wall meetings until 11am today, means I am posting my blog late for the very first time. Apologies, early morning readers. There are certainly many joys to working from home, but major malfunctions that cannot be left at work till the next day because one’s workplace exists across the hall from one’s bedroom is not one of those joys….

However! Since I am telling you a recent trial, I’d like to balance that out by telling you about an aspect of my job as executive director for the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation that makes any trial well worth the late-night work and added stress – our grants program. As a former student of the McCall-Donnelly school district, seeing these incredible projects being developed for today’s students gives me immense satisfaction and pride for my job and the people I work with. Truly, I am honored to do the work I do.

This year, we are proud to fund the Payette Lakes Community Association for their Lifestyles after-school program for the Barbara Morgan and Donnelly Elementary schools. This innovative program engages students in physical and educational activities by coaching students on how to integrate nutrition and exercise into their daily lives.

We are also pleased to present the Payette Lakes Middle School with funds to build a greenhouse. The project will teach students how to grow and tend their own garden – a valuable lesson in both nutrition and biology – and will result in fresh produce to be used in school lunches at PLMS and Barbara Morgan Elementary.

PLMS will also receive funds for an after-school technology camp called 21st Century Learner, organized by principal Susan Buescher. The camp will last 3 weeks, and will teach students basic computer programming skills and will result in a project template that can be applied to classrooms in the upcoming school year.

Donnelly Elementary is receiving funds for three exciting new programs – the first is a musical production by Missoula Children’s Theatre, in which the students are invited to play key roles in the play. The second is Tyler Vance’s new music program concept – Music Matters. He will be hiring a professional composer to visit his music class and help the students compose and perform their own original piece. Lastly, Angel Hudson’s kindergarten class will receive a new program called Touch Math, which is a highly effective, interactive way of learning math concepts and formulas.

McCall-Donnelly High School’s Winter Sports Club has been granted funds to purchase new equipment for their highly successful program, Winter Sports Are for Everyone. The program grants access to winter recreation equipment for students who would not otherwise be able to afford it. MDHS will also be receiving funds to purchase poetry anthology e-books, which will redefine the way students and teachers look at and discuss poetry by granting the entire school a more versatile way of accessing volumes that span centuries of poetic authors.

And I feel I should mention here too, that is only 8 of the 30 amazing applications we received, and many of the programs we’re funding this year are being organized by people who volunteer their time to make these things happen. I am humbled and amazed by our endlessly motivated and generous little community.

So, although other components of my life may take the back burner at times, all I have to do to remind myself of why I’m sometimes up till the wee hours hammering away at my keyboard is take one look at the phenomenal programs my work helps support.

Sometimes, life just sucks the life out of you…up…down…advance…retreat – it’s all part of that glorious game called sink or swim.

hazel cox earrings, pineapple quartz jewelry, melon jacket, Payette Lake, gold bangles, Target tank top, Nygard Collection This balmy month of April has been fraught with personal growth-inducing turbulence – I sank to the bottom of an endless body of brine called the sea of responsibility, sputtered back to life and swam gleefully to the shore of that same weighty sea to dance a jig upon its pebbly shores, and cautiously splashed around in its beckoning tide only to be swept out to sea again.

It is, after all, one hefty weekly commitment. But FU offers something to my life that I don’t currently get with any other obligation – it requires me to write for myself, no matter how brief or inconsequential some entries may be. It also insists that I take a little time to think creatively about my dress, even if all that means for the time being is throwing a cheerful jacket over an otherwise humdrum outfit. And lastly, this blog insures that I will, at least once during the week, go for a walk along Payette Lake’s recently ice-free shores with Ma and doggie Ethyl, or any number of other photo-op adventures with the fine women of this virtual establishment.

Well, folks……I had a really lovely outfit planned for today’s blog, none of which is pictured here. It included gorgeous layers of silk and wool, with a stunner of a Hazel Cox necklace I have yet to include in an FU post, and the kind of color palate that makes me weak in the knees – muted shades of plum, ochre, chocolate and taupe. Yep…..best laid plans indeed.

After another white-knuckle journey up north to McCall from my blessedly snow-free Boise home (if you missed my last adventure, click here), I arrived at my mother’s house safe but with a wicked case of cold sweats and an overwhelming eagerness for a warm fireplace and hot cup of tea. Little did I know, my snowy escapade was far from over…..

Any sane person would look at these photos and think – jeez, lady! Wasn’t it more than obvious you should not have driven into that driveway with your rinky-dink car?? Well, yes….it does appear to be a simple case of stupidity, doesn’t it…..but no! The scheming, deceitful snow is to blame! When I pulled up to the house, the snow had ever so carefully dusted itself across this gaping wallow of slush, making it appear solid. So I happily pulled in, thinking I was minutes away from shaking off the harrowing day in the comfort of Ma’s house, when – KA-THUNK – I suddenly found myself leaning distinctly to the left and unable to get out of the driver’s side door for fear of flooding my car.

So, after hefting myself out the passenger’s side door and huffing and puffing around the house a few minutes, cursing the mean ol snow and wishing I drove a giant 4WD truck, I finally called AAA. You’d think (or at least I thought) a trusted name such as theirs could end all my woes with one quick call, but no….the saga continues.

Apparently, even though I pay for roadside service anywhere, anytime, because I was stuck in a driveway my membership did not cover extraction from this mess. In the condescending words of the woman with whom I spoke, “It’s your responsibility to keep your driveway clear, and same goes for anyone you visit. Sorry I can’t do anything more for you.” For f%&* sake…..really? So with the looming dread of a $100 service bill looming over my head, I called up my secret weapon – master negotiator, Dustin Scott (may also be proudly referred to as my manfriend). Within minutes, he had AAA eating their words and a tow truck on the way. My hero! (swoon)

In other words, even if you set out ahead of the storm, it may easily catch up to you. And even though the footing looks solid, beneath that invitingly smooth surface a ghastly mess of trouble may be lying in wait.

Of the plans I made for my day, the best one by far was to forego the fashion photo shoot in favor of jammie pants and a cozy sweater (and pouring myself a glass of wine, post haste).
