Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded a plane.

Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues, in the middle of the pouring rain.

-Walkin’ in Memphis, Marc Cohn (version embedded in my soul by Dan Costello)

Story Story Night‘s BREAK-UP: Stories of the End of the Affair was on Monday.  As you may know by now, I am the driving force behind this ever-blooming live storytelling phenomenon. I do what I can to keep up, but on this night in question, with endless lines around the block confronting our sheepish and over-long will-call lists, facing my doom (erm…hosting duties) in the Rose Room  was like touching down in the middle of the pouring rain.

After some heartburn, we somehow packed 500+ people into the Rose Room to hear stories of Splitsville, with fantastic featured storytellers and random intervals of Braveheart bag-pipe music inexplicably wailing in from the restaurant below.

No clothing item better connects with the blues, and how to rock the sh*t out of the blues, than these edgy shoes. My Tibetan turquoise, coral and beaded breastplate ($140, Armor Bijoux) also puts up a good frontal defense.

The above photo represents how I feel on Story Story Nights. Blurry with continual motion, and tired around the eyes. Or maybe I’m just trying to look like a fashion model. OK, you got me, for BREAK-UP, I was actually trying to look like a fashion model.

Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear Sophie Theallet - Runway Solomiya Zgoda Photo: Marcus Tondo / GoRunway.comThis model, actually, from Sophie Theallet’s fall 2012 Ready to Wear line. I always try to dress for the theme, but I just wasn’t feeling anything BREAK-UP worthy in my closet. Then a few weeks ago, I spied this look. The top reminds me of  the 70’s couch you awkwardly had your first kiss (or groping) on. Worn with all the sweatervest and turtlenecked geekdom of your adolescence. Then, on the bottom: drapey drama, drama, drama; broken up by a slit that never quits…rawr. All bottomed out by those awesome, quirky, laced-up shoes. I star-cross love this look, as I can never, ever possess it.

So instead, I sent up my wish into the Universe…

And by the Universe I mean I posted this look to our FU Facebook group, with the noted desire to find something “similar.” On a thrift run, Kelly Lynae texted me a photo of this dress. She knows vintage Liz Clairborne has a thing for my body. A love affair over the decades.

I know, I know, this dress sort of looks nothing like the Sophie Theallet. But squint. It does everything I wanted that look to do. Bold color in an old-school update print. A bit innocent with the boxy shape and pleated bottom. A tad naughty with the bare legs and shoe laces. A pinch bad ass with the breastplate and the blue suede shoes.

PS: After a BREAK-UP, do what most mortals do, and get NAKED

Sometimes life just sucks the wind right out of the very bottom of your lungs and forces you on your ass, as if to say – sit the heck down you crazy person, and take a damned breather! If the last couple weeks haven’t done that for/to me, then……well, I shall fashion myself a makeshift white flag from my undergarments and wave it wearily before my anxiety-ridden face.

I am currently splitting my time between two very different but equally demanding jobs – as Executive Director for the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation, and as the Relator (which essentially means communicator/coordinator/motivator extraordinaire) for Story Story Night.

This past Monday at Story Story Night, we had our largest show to date – 450 people! I think we might be popular….it was one hell of a fine show, and we were even graced by the presence of the lovely Chanel Da Silva from Trey McIntyre Project and our talented trophy maker from Bricolage, Juliana McLenna (both pictured above).

Story Story Night, vintage fashion, rhinestones, sequinsThis is how we rock the spotlight at Story Story  – sequins and rhinestones, my friend.
And I just had to go and act the gooftard while Jess enchants the camera with those big, sultry eyes…that’ll teach me.

Today I’m in McCall preparing for MDEF’s annual Chocolate & Spirit Tasting fundraising event, which is tomorrow. It’s my first time putting together this event, so I’m terrified and excited, which is an exhausting combination. Thankfully, I have a wonderful board of directors who have been working diligently to make sure we have a successful turnout. And perhaps, dear reader, if you find yourself in McCall you might stop in for a taste or three…after all, it is for the children.

Then right after Chocolate & Spirits, it’s back to Boise with me to sign closing papers on the new property my manfriend and I are purchasing (which was featured in last week’s blog – Dressing for Purgatory). It’s been a grueling, teeth-gnashing battle, but we done won, dammit! There are garden hoes, honey bees and clucking hens aplenty in our near future, oh yes……

Boise fashion, vintage fashion, white booties About the outfit: When prepping for the last Story Story Night, I knew I needed to wear something that would give me strength – an armor of sorts. I wanted to put on a garment that would coat me in confidence and give me the fortitude to move through the throngs with elegance and ease. For such a formidable task, there really was only one thing for me to wear – my great-grandmother’s opera vest, circa early 1900’s.

rhinestones, antique clothing, Boise fashion, Idaho fashion, thrift store fashion, onyx ring, Sergio Collection bracelet, velvet skirt, black velvet,  This delicate silk wonder is studded in heavy, leaded rhinestones and silver-lined glass seed beads, and carefully tiered with scalloped edges so that as you move, the bottom of the vest swings gracefully about your sides. It feels incredible. I’ve truly never worn anything quite so thoughtfully and artfully crafted. I kept thinking about my great-granny Edith, and how she might have looked in this vest as she strolled through the streets of New York City on her way to an opera. How incredible, that more than a century later her great-granddaughter can revive her spirit through an indelible piece of timeless fashion.

I just had to take a photo of the tag my grandmother wrote when she gave me this vest for my 16th birthday – it’s too funny (and endearing).
Of course I would never give this treasure away! Golly, gramms…..

I wouldn’t normally do this, but aside from the vest, every stitch of clothing – boots, skirt, camisole, bracelet – has already been featured in a past blog. That’s the undeniable power of one very special item of clothing – I dub thee, “wonder vest”!

I loved the color palate for this outfit so much, I had to take a close-up shot. The coat I’m wearing here is from an earlier post, Violet Turning Violet

There was a graphic designer who was hired for her first career job at a small, creative marketing firm. She got to dream up and create things such as filming a dog and pony show to showcase the company’s portfolio. Life was pretty good.

Then one day a copywriter in a light brown dress with shoulder length, curly hair and a bicycle helmet on entered the firm’s doors smiling. Her laughter was magnetic, warm and inviting. Her name was Jessica Holmes. The designer knew instantly she wanted Jessica and her to be good friends.

Four years later, after another successful evening of Story, Story Night, the designer is wearing ochre tights (Target: $5) and celebrating that friendship with Jessica, and the ones that have followed in her wake.

Jessica attracts talented, passionate and goodhearted people. Because of this, the designer has met many new friends.  This dress is a Target hand-me-down from one of those generous and creative souls, Kelly Lynae, a woman with a mesmerizing singing and writing voice. Bottoming out this outfit are chocolate velvet, high heeled shoes from a thrift store, $5-6.

It is hard to tell what is going on in this photo, but you should know Kelly is wearing something epic and she might be sharing it with you on Monday.

The wooden necklace was a Christmas gift from last year. The green turquoise the designer may never take off is antique Navajo silver jewelry given to her by her mom.

This is the designer’s date, another gifted and talented friend of Jessica’s. He’s a conceptual artist whose paintings are inspired by introspection and social analysis. His name is Marcus Pierce and he is a keeper. Largely because he waited around for a long time while the designer shot photos of the FU ladies.

Thank you Jessica, for changing and enriching this designer’s life. I hope there is no end to this story.

Anna, I love these photos you took of me.
AND . . . Happy Birthday Kelly!!!
