I like to get dressed with ideas. References to nature, science, literature make me giddier than jeans that make my ass look spectacular (though those have their place). Maybe it is because fashion is often purely material and superficial, but it doesn’t have to be. My clothes can do a lot more than make me look hot, they can allude to my inner self and the duplicitous nature of my character.

I am never only a pretty woman. I am sexual and asexual, masculine and feminine,  soft and strong. I am both the beast and its master, ever ludicrous and profoundly serious. In these illustrations from Peony Yip I see the tension between instinct and awareness in each of us. When I get dressed, I do not only tend to my outer self, but to the inner contradictions, the strengths masquerading as weaknesses that propel me forward.

Thomas Lea captured this outfit for Boise Style on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I threw it on without thinking, but, upon further review, it captures many of my favorite contradictions. I love the softness of a wool wrap, woven by my grandmother, against the hard, armor-like cuff and necklace from Armor Bijoux. I love Mickey Mouse, an iconic symbol of childhood, wearing a headdress of Navajo squash blossoms.

I’m three parts professional, two parts child, two parts warrior, and one part old man. And somehow, I’m still the type of person who wears skinny jeans with cowboy boots. Every item was either thrifted, gifted or borrowed from Bethany.

The top runways are all being stomped to death with unusual contradictions. I always love a beast versus beauty reference, like this German Shepherd sweater.

Or these fox pumps found at Street Fashion Style:

We Are Handsome gave up loads of fierce animal face last summer. I’m not sure which I like best, the wolf mini-dress from here:

Or the lion roar leotard from Violent Green:

On this night, Anna D. gave Nicole a vintage silk Bob Mackie kimono blouse with a demented kitten and a ball of yarn on it. Only Knuckle could make that sexy (it’s her superpower). I can’t wait to see how she pulls it off. Jaime looks appalled!

But could she wear a sequined zebra on her arm and still get laid? Hmmmm?

Don’t even get me started on Jessica’s goat-faced glory. That is straight-up Bacchanalian sex appeal.

Sometimes being both the beast and its master means wearing a kitty kimono.

A large part of Bangkok is, to quote Beck, shopping malls coming out of the walls. And then there are the street stalls. And then there’s Nana Chen.

Lady Luck, happenstance, lot, pluck, providence–whatever you choose to call it, my first Friday night in Bangkok I got lost in a freight elevator with Nana Chen. Nana is a Saigon/Bangkok-based photographer with an exceptional eye for portraiture. She has a fashion blog called Asia Street Style (ASS). I blog for Frivolous Universe (FU). If that isn’t a match made in a stalled freight elevator, I don’t know what is.

On Sunday, to initiate me into the city of cheap thrills, Nana trotted out her collection of subtly-slutty faux-lace: tiny, tatted Matador jackets, Chantilly-esque trenchcoats, and ultra-feminine DayGlo ballerina-necked cotton tops. Turns out she had purchased them all for a pittance–150 Thai Baht or under $5 USD–at her local Silom street stall.

I love the detailing on this top–so much romance for under five dollars! And all I had to do was slip it over my James Perse tank top and my thrifted skirt by Maria Bianca Nero. Nana styled my lacy top for this photoshoot and posted three of these photos yesterday on Asia Street Style. These peekaboo cotton tops get snapped up fast in Bangkok–Pepto-Bismol pink was the only color left when we reached Nana’s favorite clothing stall. The fact that I was already wearing matching Cece ballet flats by J. Crew? Kismet.

This is my Idaho grandmother’s moonstone necklace. Every now and then it sheds a moonstone like a seven-year-old loses teeth. Despite their translucence, I always manage to find the lost moonstone. Perhaps if I sleep with one under my pillow, the Lime Fairy will come . . . .

My handbag is Dooney & Bourke, and it’s getting dirty. I could take it to one of Bangkok’s hi-so bag spas for a good shampoo, but I’d rather save my baht for cheap, glorious street clothes. By the way, the above photo is what you look like when, in the Bangkok heat, you reach full-wilt.

And this is what you look like when you recover! It’s hot here and life moves fast. Sometimes you just have to trust where you are and who you’re with.

To find the faux-lace clothing stall: Take BTS to Sala Deang. Exit 2. Walk along Silom until you reach the junction with Convent. Bring a little baht.

Kelly: Have you embraced the blouse yet? If not, might we suggest a 2012 resolution for you?

Nicole: In case you’re hesitant, I’ll let you know that Kelly and I only fully embraced the blouse a little over a year ago.  The love affair actually started with the blush blouse  you may remember from last week.  It snowballed from there.

K: What’s the difference between a blouse and any old top? A blouse blouses over some kind of gather, usually at the waist or hips with a belt.  Ninety-five percent of the time blouses must be tucked in, or it just doesn’t work. Girls don’t wear blouses. Women wear blouses. On the first day of 2012, we wore ours tucked in, belted, and layered with cozy knits.  Vintage 70s You Babes floral blouse with billowy sleeves, wool sweater vest, and skinny jeans.

K: Lisa Sanchez grabbed this wool sweater vest in a everything-you-can-fit-in-a-bag-for-a-dollar sale at a thrift store and I was the lucky recipient. Because this vest is slim with a crew neck, we thought that a blouse with voluminous sleeves and a high-collar would give the silhouette visual interest. Nicole got me these carved rose studs in Boston last year.

K: Ah, another Nicole present, this red jelly belt was in my Xmas package. It faintly sparkles in the sunlight… like vampire skin.

N: I got the belt at a funky little shop in the West Village.

K: Oh the power of socks should never be underestimated, young Padawan. Even though this green isn’t in the rest of the outfit, I love the way these mint textured socks look with my lavender loafer pumps.

N: A big lesson we’ve been learning lately is that socks can make or break an outfit!  That little extra detail might be all you need to make your outfit adorably quirky and interesting. (Also, 10 points for your Star Wars  reference)

K: Enter my grandmother’s vintage embroidered hankerchief in the same shade of mint green as my socks. This way, if I catch some rabid fashionista eying my sock choice, doubting the wisdom of the hue, I’ll whip out my mint handkerchief and shriek, “Does this justify if for you??!!”

Ahem… This vintage 70s Etra suede purse has a chain strap that hides away to convert into a clutch. Repeating motif! Chain strap on purse and chain hardware on shoes.

N: We repeat our mantra once again: details, details, details.

K: At $3.00, this blouse might be one of my best vintage finds. I can’t wait to wear it in warmer weather and show off its sheerness.

N: I’ll call this outfit “what I might have worn on New Year’s if I wasn’t baby sitting 100 twenty-one year olds.”  Unfortunately my New Year’s was spent working a private event for over 100 drunk college kids.  It was messy.  There was blood.  It was not much fun.  I decided to make  myself feel better by putting together a fabulous blog outfit consisting of this vintage silk bow-tie blouse, sparkly cardigan and wool high-waisted trousers.

K: I love how fearlessly you mix three vibrant, saturated colors. The bright blue, red, and magenta are so playful, that they make these classic items (blouse, cardigan, and trousers) feel youthful and modern.

N: When your sweater is as embellished as this, it’s best to keep your jewelry sparkly but simple. So I went for a simple rhinestone stud earring.

K: There’s something very wintery about the beaded embellishments on this cardigan.

N: I love just the little pop of pink coming out of the sleeves and the neckline.  I actually bought this sweater at a second hand store in Boston on the same trip I got the earrings Kelly is wearing.

K: Alternative title to this blog: “How to Wear Socks with Pumps.” This outfit wouldn’t quite work without them.

N: Socks save the day again!  Pink argyle ties into my pink blouse.

N: The jewel tones of my outfit caused a light explosion in my living room.

K: KAPOW!

When in doubt, tuck and belt.
