What does one do when packing for a quick business trip to the snowy north-country? Throw random garments in an overnight bag and hit the road without giving your attire more than a fleeting thought, of course!

I arrived in McCall on Monday with a cushy 10 minutes to spare before my first of many meetings. Fortunately, I wore a fantastically comfortable hand-knit wool sweater over layered cotton tank tops, my favorite pair of jeans, and wool lined waterproof leather boots that are so cozy they may as well be slippers. By pairing these items with some key accents – raw silk scarf, Hazel Cox earrings, and turquoise Navajo pawn ring – I managed to pull off a great “business casual” look.

This feat of comfort and fashionability reaffirms my gripe that there is absolutely no excuse for people who show up to work, school, or public in general for that matter, in sweats. Shame on you public sweat pant wearers! If I wanted to see you in your jammies, I’d stop by your house at 7am. Didn’t your mother teach you common decency? Oh wait, I guess we learn our social behavior from celebrities now…

Madonna, sweatpants, Madonna candid shotShame on you, Madonna! Just because you’re rich doesn’t mean you get to be a slob.

sweatpants in public, shopping in sweatpants, pants with writing on the buttHow embarrassing – these girls must have forgotten to change
out of their PJs before leaving the house!

4 hours later, meeting #1 out of the way, and I am unpacking my things at Ma’s house. This can’t be right – I’ve only packed one blouse, a pencil skirt, a pair of jeans, a couple sweater vests, and a pair of heeled boots that look quite comical when worn in snow country…….double check. Yep, that’s it. What the hell was I thinking? Apparently I was thinking, “Gee, I’d sure love a sprained ankle and a good outfit challenge during my two full days of meetings!” Sigh……challenge it is. Here’s what I came up with:

Outfit Attempt #1

vintage Sakowitz silk blouse, blouse with a bow on the front, tie front blouse, silk blouse, Bonnie Cashin, suede purse, Abercrombie skinny jeans, waterproof leather boots, black leather, Hazel Cox, Navajo pawn ring, turquoise ring

Not only did I pack just one blouse, I happened to pack a vintage Sakowitz silk number that I’ve never worn. I’ve certainly tried, but the big, billowy neck bow has always stopped me short. The color is positively swoon-worthy, and the silk is top-quality, but that damned bow! It’s just so….bow-like.

My first attempted outfit was with a silk-cotton blended sweater vest by August Silk, a pair of grey jeans by Abercrombie, my steadfast black leather boots, and my trusty companion – the glorious brown suede Bonnie Cashin purse. Not quite feeling this one though…..let’s try again!

Outfit Attempt #2

silk blouse with tie front, wool sweater vest, wool pencil skirt, J. Crew pencil skirt, white booties, leather booties, vintage rope necklace, modern business attire, women's business fashion, business casual

I love the color palate here, but this is a mess of a getup for the winter McCall climate. The black wool pencil skirt by J. Crew is the quintessential “business attire” staple, which I’m sure is the reason why I threw it in my suitcase, and the bone-white leather booties are a fantastic modern answer to the ho-hum black leather heels that most dames wear in their business attire, but neither of these items will do in 6 feet of snow. However, the beautiful, creamy white knit wool vest with braided leather covered buttons by Sentex of Australia is getting closer……so warm, so elegant…

Side Note: I love that my Worthington tights perfectly match the warm brown of my vest buttons, the bone hue of the booties pair perfectly with the vest, my Hazel Cox earrings have a stripe of true red that matches the blouse, and the turquoise in my ring is complimentary to the blouse. And note how the knot of the silk tie mirrors the knot in my ‘20’s era beaded knot necklace, a lovely gift from Kim Philley. Details, details, details!

Outfit Attempt #3

Bonnie Cashin purse, brown suede purse, vintage leather purse, Idaho fashion, McCall fashion, thrift store fashion, wool sweater vest, Australian wool, woodpile, vintage silk blouse, red silk, August Silk

Well, here it be – the outfit I finally chose as the one to wear during day #2 of a long day of meetings. It pulls the best from both blouse explorations, and creates a look that stands out but is still understated. I wanted something unique and fashion-forward, but had to make sure I felt comfortable in what I was wearing in order to focus on my tasks rather than fretting over my attire. And as per usual, everything here was purchased at a pittance from various thrift stores.

This humble fashion feat begs for one last declaration of shame……..Hillary, WHY?? It really is completely unnecessary to wear such god-awful business attire. Please, next time you peer into your vast closet of polyester pantsuits, reconsider. The fate of our nation’s image rests largely on your ghastly clad, foam-padded shoulders, and how can anyone be taken seriously when dressed head to toe in a single and oft unflattering color? Just……please, reconsider.

Sometimes life just sucks the wind right out of the very bottom of your lungs and forces you on your ass, as if to say – sit the heck down you crazy person, and take a damned breather! If the last couple weeks haven’t done that for/to me, then……well, I shall fashion myself a makeshift white flag from my undergarments and wave it wearily before my anxiety-ridden face.

I am currently splitting my time between two very different but equally demanding jobs – as Executive Director for the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation, and as the Relator (which essentially means communicator/coordinator/motivator extraordinaire) for Story Story Night.

Story Story Night, Trey McIntyre Project, Bricolage, Chanel DaSilva

This past Monday at Story Story Night, we had our largest show to date – 450 people! I think we might be popular….it was one hell of a fine show, and we were even graced by the presence of the lovely Chanel Da Silva from Trey McIntyre Project and our talented trophy maker from Bricolage, Juliana McLenna (both pictured above).

Story Story Night, vintage fashion, rhinestones, sequinsThis is how we rock the spotlight at Story Story  – sequins and rhinestones, my friend.
And I just had to go and act the gooftard while Jess enchants the camera with those big, sultry eyes…that’ll teach me.

Today I’m in McCall preparing for MDEF’s annual Chocolate & Spirit Tasting fundraising event, which is tomorrow. It’s my first time putting together this event, so I’m terrified and excited, which is an exhausting combination. Thankfully, I have a wonderful board of directors who have been working diligently to make sure we have a successful turnout. And perhaps, dear reader, if you find yourself in McCall you might stop in for a taste or three…after all, it is for the children.

Then right after Chocolate & Spirits, it’s back to Boise with me to sign closing papers on the new property my manfriend and I are purchasing (which was featured in last week’s blog – Dressing for Purgatory). It’s been a grueling, teeth-gnashing battle, but we done won, dammit! There are garden hoes, honey bees and clucking hens aplenty in our near future, oh yes……

Boise fashion, vintage fashion, white booties About the outfit: When prepping for the last Story Story Night, I knew I needed to wear something that would give me strength – an armor of sorts. I wanted to put on a garment that would coat me in confidence and give me the fortitude to move through the throngs with elegance and ease. For such a formidable task, there really was only one thing for me to wear – my great-grandmother’s opera vest, circa early 1900’s.

rhinestones, antique clothing, Boise fashion, Idaho fashion, thrift store fashion, onyx ring, Sergio Collection bracelet, velvet skirt, black velvet,  This delicate silk wonder is studded in heavy, leaded rhinestones and silver-lined glass seed beads, and carefully tiered with scalloped edges so that as you move, the bottom of the vest swings gracefully about your sides. It feels incredible. I’ve truly never worn anything quite so thoughtfully and artfully crafted. I kept thinking about my great-granny Edith, and how she might have looked in this vest as she strolled through the streets of New York City on her way to an opera. How incredible, that more than a century later her great-granddaughter can revive her spirit through an indelible piece of timeless fashion.

I just had to take a photo of the tag my grandmother wrote when she gave me this vest for my 16th birthday – it’s too funny (and endearing).
Of course I would never give this treasure away! Golly, gramms…..

I wouldn’t normally do this, but aside from the vest, every stitch of clothing – boots, skirt, camisole, bracelet – has already been featured in a past blog. That’s the undeniable power of one very special item of clothing – I dub thee, “wonder vest”!

I loved the color palate for this outfit so much, I had to take a close-up shot. The coat I’m wearing here is from an earlier post, Violet Turning Violet

Kelly: Jason and I went to Idaho Dance Theatre‘s winter show on Saturday night to see our dear friend Yurek Hansen dance. I wore a vintage Ma Grand sweater and Eight Degrees South tiered silk maxi skirt. This outfit reminds me of Nicole’s lace maxi skirt and merino wool sweater from a couple months ago.

N: Can I just say I absolutely adore what is happening with your hair here?

K: Thank you. I’m trying new things. Repeating motif – my thrifted sphere drop earrings correspond with the dangley pearls on the bow applique of my sweater. I got it for $8.00 this weekend at Lux. I love its rich saffron color and the waffle-knit texture – so cozy!

K: This Catholic saints bracelet is from a Catholic store in Kent, Wash. I’m not Catholic (or religious), but I love iconography. I bought this vintage Etra convertible clutch at Acquired Again Antiques in Hyde Park for $20.00. Their stock is always high quality with reasonable prices (for an antique store, not for a thrift store).

N: Kelly got me a similar bracelet,  but sadly the elastic broke.  It must have sensed what a heathen it was dangling from.

K: I wonder why this one hasn’t broken yet.

K: I don’t remember which thrift store I got this skirt from (like it matters) but I do remember that it was a steal at $5.00. I let Nicole wear it once and she stepped on the hem and tore one of the ruffles.

N: I knew you would bring that up.  I’m sorry! But I can vouch for the glorious-ness that is this skirt.

stacked heels, silk tiered skirt, cable knit knee high socks

K: Michael Kors stacked suede heels and cable knit socks. I specifically chose brown shoes and socks over the expected black. Brown interacted better with the overall color palette of saffron, charcoal and forest green.

N: You look so tall!

N: Thursday was a day packed full of goodness.  I got up bright and early to get some new headshots taken, which also meant getting my hair and make-up done professionally.  I didn’t want to let my fancy face go to waste, so I scurried home afterward to take some blog pictures.  I arrived home to two packages, one from an on-line vintage seller, and the other from muh Boo full of lots of vintage and thrifted goodies!  My outfit contains some of my new scores, as well as me wearing more make-up than you’ll likely ever see on my face again.

Velvet crop top, skinny zippy pants, wool blazer.

K: I think I’ll start tagging your ass in its best outfits, so we can compile your ass-modeling portfolio. You know, just in case the acting doesn’t work out.

N: Thank you.  I think I’ll start trying to always take pictures of my ass in my outfits.  To appease the public.

N: The velvet embellished blouse is from A Little Wicked in the LES. It’s a strange little top, with elastic on the bottom and the sleeves, poofy shoulders, gold shoulder buttons and gold cording along the neck-line and shoulders.  The tag is pretty old and worn out, so I think the brand is Zup Two Inc., but I can’t tell.  I tried looking it up, but haven’t found anything…anyone heard of it by chance?

K: I love how strange this top is!

N: Paired with stretchy, skinny pants with zipper ankles and brown leather belt.  Neither of these are thrifted, but leftovers from my Urban and Banana Republic sale-rack trolling days.

N: Gray and Maroon Argyle socks and platform wedges. Love the little flair I get when I leave the zipper open at the bottom.

K: The best thing about these platforms is they were left behind by your room’s previous renter, thus freeeeee.

N: Inspiration for zipper-ankle pants with wedges:

N: Can you spy the subtly slutty aspect of this weeks outfit?

K: Oooo, I know! I know! It’s your exposed midriff and the skin-tight pants, offset by the masculine shape of the blazer. BOOM!

N: Gold Star for Ms. Robinson!

N: Kelly sent me this sweet Cricketeer Wool Blazer in my care package.  I got another vintage blazer from Bethany that I’m sure will be making an appearance soon.

N: My package also included our fancy new FU business cards and this creepy silver Gerber Baby spoon ring complete with ever-staring baby face.

K: Creeeeeepy…

FU business card & silver Gerber baby ring

K: Wow, those hair and makeup professionals really knew their stuff. You look great.

N: Aww, shucks.

K: Nicole just added something else fabulous to her wardrobe, with only a little encouragement from me.

N: This is what was inside the box from Etsy.  It’s several yards of glorious 70’s polyester fabric made into a halter dress and feather-hooded coat that both fit me like a dream.  Look out for this in the very near future.

70s vintage dress hooded coat jacket evening gown polyester feather trimmed hood

K: She’s not the only one who got some vintage fashion love in the mail. Also from A Little Wicked, also vintage 70s polyester, Nicole sent me this sequined tube top jumpsuit. She’s the bibbity-bobbity-boost!

Vintage fashion is extra-special when it arrives by post.
