There’s this amazing thing that happens here in our humble City of Trees……it’s called STORY STORY NiGHT. Ever heard of it? If not, you should check it out. True stories on a theme, told live onstage and without notes. Simple…right? Anyone can do it. YOU can do it. But if the thought of getting onstage and telling a tale from your life leaves you feeling at a lose for words, our STUDiO can help you find em. And get this – it’s FREE. Every month. True story.

I think of this process as a journey of sorts. What follows is an abridged version of what we call the Essential Elements of Story. If you want the full length version, well, you’ll just have to attend the STUDiO, dear readers.

I :  THE MAP
The map of your story is the direction in which you choose to guide your audience. If you remember to stay on track and indulge your audience by describing the highlights (or more often, low points) along the way, they’ll stay with you to the end.

II : THE PACE
Don’t wear your travelers out. More importantly, don’t wear yourself out. Give your story the space it needs in order to be fully realized and experienced by your audience.

III : THE LEFT TURN
This is the key turn in your story – the surprising moment when you choose not to stay the course and things get real. Now is the time to reveal to them your vulnerability.

IV : GO THE DiSTANCE
Now that you’ve taken these tourists of your life to the next level and invited them to be a part of the journey by taking that left turn with you, go the distance. Drive your story home by fearlessly reflecting on how that left turn affected you.

V : THE FAREWELL
Be sure to give your travelers something to remember you by. For the purposes of this journey, the perfect farewell gift is a solid, meaningful goodbye.

black halo, silk baby doll dress, hazel cox, calvin klein shoes, strappy leather heelsOn February 10 of this year, Dustin and I officially fled the tortuous unknown of bidding war purgatory and jumped straight into the searing hot certainty of property ownership. Again.

In March of 2010, we purchased our home in a cozy, quiet little neighborhood just blocks away from our favorite Boise-living perks – the Boise River, the Greenbelt, and a generous pocket of incredible ethnic markets. As we settled into our new home, we couldn’t help but notice that the tiny ramshackle of a dwelling next door was vacant. The poor old place had a caved roof, sagging shingles, and more dandelions carpeting the yard than grass.

Eventually, the yokels who owned the place came around and, through a series of conversations that included impromptu outbursts of harmonica solos and requests for a “jar of water”, we discerned that the old woman who lived there several years ago had died, and her gaggle of toothless offspring were fixing to sell.

It was a lengthy, exhausting, and teeth gnashing battle to get these folks to comprehend that the chunk of dirt and dilapidated shack was not in fact worth the laughable $80k they were asking, but eventually we prevailed and paid a fine sum of $30k for the neglected but infinitely promising lot.

What was once an oppressively depressing, mold-infested shanty filled with cobwebs and over a century of palpable memories is now slowly but surely becoming a greenhouse and studio apartment. The weed-strewn lot is now home to a community garden (and a petanque court, for good measure). We’re slowly coaxing the peach, plum, and apricot trees back to their fruitful old selves, and are making plans for chickens and bees……perhaps a goat or two.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire……..we’ve invested ourselves in a lifetime of work; my arms feel like wet noodles and I have constant blisters on my hands from digging, scraping, and shaping the soil, and my skin is dry to cracking from being constantly caked with dirt……but for now, it’s definitely the fire of inspiration and dedication we’re feeling.

Great feats of dedicated inspiration can often suck the motivation out of other creative endeavors…..thank goodness for the unending fashion prowess of Kelly Lynae, who dressed me for this post, and whatever would I do without Bethany Walter‘s indomitable photography skills. A big huzzah! to Jessica Holmes this week too, for suggesting we stage a photo shoot in my “haunted shanty.”  It’s an incredible blessing to have such creative, talented friends.

spring in Boise, Boise weather, megamillions lotto Last Friday, I joined many hordes of hopeful folks lined up in convenience stores across the country, hoping against hope to be inducted into that strangely surreal and utterly life-changing league of lottery winners. I took the utmost care in selecting my numbers, recalling any combination of digits with even the slightest modicum of personal meaning. With small, precise pen strokes, I marked a vertical line through the center of each number, just as the minuscule red type on the back of the ticket instructed me to do. I was not going to lose this thing due to a technical error, by god. My boyfriend and I walked our tickets to the corner tobacco store, picked up a case of cheap beer, and headed home to distract ourselves with said beer until that fated hour – 8pm – rolled around.

Not only did I not win, my lucky numbers didn’t bring me so much as a $5 consolation prize. I’ve played the lotto before and not won, but for some reason this lose was different. I felt defeated and depressed after the winning numbers were announced and I had triple checked my worthless tickets.

I think Dustin’s and my recent acquisition of the property next door to our home made me realize in more immediate terms just how much money, effort, and time it takes to build a secure and worthwhile home. Dustin spends countless hours each day planting seeds, building garden beds, deconstructing the dilapidated shack that sits on the property, and coordinating work days with our willing neighbors. In some idealistic corner of my mind, I had hoped I could win absurd amounts of money in order to ease his stress and drive our vision forward in an unencumbered and financially stable way. Laughably remote as it was to even entertain the notion of making our daily struggles disappear with one lucky ticket, it was a difficult fantasy to release from my obsessive mind.

Although I’m not coming to you today as a millionaire, I am writing this blog as a truly fulfilled and happy person. I’m fortunate enough to have a job I enjoy, a partner love with all my heart, an amazing home that gets better with each passing day, and friends who are enthusiastically willing to join me in the simple joy of climbing trees……just because the day is lovely and warm and we feel like seeing our everyday world from a new perspective……

Many thanks to Kelly Lynae for taking these photos and to Jessica Holmes for getting me out of the house on this day. And serious friend points to both for not questioning me for a second when I said I was in the mood to party with some bronze statues in front of the capitol building. True friends don’t laugh at the silliness of it all – they join the party.
